SNC Online Fanzine launches

A few weeks ago, a dedicated group of SuperFans of Atlantic Records recording artist Straight No Chaser released the first issue of SNC QuarterNotes, a quarterly magazine written by fans, for fans.

The magazine was conceived by Shaina Eng, also the founder of the SNC Fanchat podcast, in order to provide a central hub for SNC fan information and networking through fan submissions.

In addition to the content aimed at enthusiastic fans of SNC, the first issue also includes features on other items of general a cappella community interest, including features on Pete Hollens, The House Jacks, and The Hyannis Sound, and a 38-song “Summer Playlist” of primarily all-male a cappella recordings.

The entire 40-page (free online) magazine is available at the SNC Quarter Notes website, and is published via scribd.

Okay, I’ll admit that if you are a die-hard fan of SNC, you probably already read this cover to cover (at least five times) by now, and possibly have ordered a hardcopy. But even if you’re (like me) not the target audience of this publication, it’s worth a read since the community hasn’t had a fan publication of this caliber in quite some time (if ever), and it is a great example of what a dedicated group of fans can do.

How low can you go? Or maybe it’s high? Either way, the a cappella group Straight No Chaser is quite well known for their hit ‘12 Days Of Christmas’, which, if you watch, is quite hilarious (just click the link). I heard this song on the radio, and I have to say, I love the “Africa” by Toto tribute. Started at the University of Indiana, the original group hadn’t sung together in years when their Youtube video of the ‘12 Days Of Christmas’ was posted and got over 12 million hits. The original group reunited and started touring, while also making holiday albums. Since then, different members have come and gone, but the group remains, and there is still a new group at the university every year. My favorite by them is With A Twist, released this year, because it has a great cover of Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” and a beautiful mix of Jason’s Mraz’s “I’m Your’s” and “Somewhere Over The Rainbow”, originally sung by Judy Garland. See, you don’t always need an amplifier to make a big noise.
